Winter damage of pavements

In this research, modeling and characterization efforts are combined to prevent winter damage in pavements and enable an improvement of currently used winter maintenance routines. The computational model is based on a multi-scale finite element model for detailed damage prediction due to freeze-thaw cycles. Weakening due to long-term moisture infiltration, frost formation and wear due to traffic and (mechanical and chemical) winter maintenance actions are included as important aspects of the research.
