Highway Engineering Laboratory

Highway engineering covers a wide field including the geometry of the road, the integral pavement system and its performance and design, and road materials especially bituminous materials (asphalt) and unbound materials (gravel and sand). Highway engineering includes not just highways and other roads but also new road concepts, such as “the electrified road”, and furthermore railways and airfields. The Dept. of Civil & Architectural Engineering is conducting highway engineering research within the Divisions of Structural Engineering & Bridges, Building Materials, and Soil & Rock Mechanics. The education program is organized from the Division of Building Technology & Design. Together, the activities are working towards contributing to solving society’s grand challenges and ensuring the economic, environmental and social sustainability of our current and future infrastructure network.

The Highway Engineering Laboratory constitutes a platform for (i) the physical highway engineering lab and (ii) the Department’s formalized co-operation with the construction industry through five Adjunct Professors.

The physical highway engineering lab provides an important resource for the entire Department as well as for related sciences at KTH. It contains equipment for rheological measurements, chemo-mechanical testing, microscopy and X-ray tomography, supported by a supercomputer for data processing. In the lab, the computer tomography where road material specimens can be studied when subjected to controlled loading and temperature, is seen internationally as one of the most advanced systems in its domain. The Laboratory is also part of KTH’s Virtual Laboratory Structure ( portal.materiallab.kth.se/Aboutus.aspx), via which it is closely connected to related material and science laboratories at KTH and can be easily accessed for external parties.

Within the Division of Highway Engineering Laboratory there are five Adjunct Professors with wide competence within the highway engineering field. The Adjunct Professors have their employment at the three major Swedish contractors and personify the tight co-operation between KTH and the construction industry.

The highway engineering domain keeps many interactive relationships with external research groups and laboratories, among which VTI (Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute), EMPA (the Swiss Laboratory for Material Science and Technology, linked to ETH University) and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, in USA.

Additionally, the domain keeps close connections with the KTH Road2Science Competence Centre ( ) that gathers cross-disciplinary knowledge and aims to shorten the successful implementation times of scientific discoveries to the engineering practise.
