Optimal ramp metering strategies for the Swedish motorways
The project aims to investigate and evaluate the potential of using ramp metering strategies to mitigate traffic congestion on the Swedish motorways. In particular, the Södra Länken motorway tunnel in Stockholm is used as a case study, which is prone to temporary closures due to congestion. The research involves, data-driven analyses to understand the network traffic dynamics and to identify critical bottleneck locations and appropriate ramps where metering can be feasible and beneficial. Traffic simulation is used for the implementation and evaluation of different strategies. Recommendations for the most adequate metering strategies and their requirements will be provided to the local traffic authorities as the basis for decisions on potential field deployments.
