Building Materials

Composition, microstructure and properties of building materials, and the link to their function and service life in different applications. An expansive area is so-called green materials, such as modified wood and biobased composites, adhesives and coating systems. The challenges mainly concern material’s sensitiveness to moisture and biological degradation.

Building Services Engineering

Energy services for buildings and districts, smart building performance assessment, indoor environmental control in high-performance buildings, energy quality management in high-performance buildings and districts, building information modeling (BIM) applications for building services, energy modeling, buildings as complex systems, smart control systems and service quality management (facility management), resource-efficient retrofitting, indoor environmental control in special environments (hospitals/wards, operation theatres, sensitive industrial settings, tunnels), resource-efficiency and user behavior in the built environment.

Building Technology

The subject includes development by design, construction and dimensioning, and also by the building process, to improve building constructions and in particular the building envelope to achieve moisture safety, energy efficiency and a healthy indoor climate

Concrete Structures

The area of concrete structures contains function, design, construction, performance and rehabilitation of concrete and masonry structures and buildings. Sprayed concrete (shotcrete) and technical applications for newly developed concrete materials and the effects of dynamic loading are also included. The research is directed towards large concrete structures, extremely loaded concrete structures and advanced concrete materials.

Fluid and Climate Technology

Focus on models and numerical simulations for buildings and built environment. Gas and liquid flow, basic heat transfer, thermal comfort and dissemination mechanisms for airborne pollutants are included. Advanced CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) models are used together with other simulation programs and analytical models to evaluate indoor environments and building components. Indoor climate and environmental issues are central.

Soil- and Rock Mechanics

The division performs research related to ground improvement methods (deep mixing, compaction, preloading with vertical drains), foundation of dam constructions, rock mechanics, tunneling, and grouting. Research areas are failure mechanisms, observational method, reliability based design, geo-statistics, mechanical properties, soil chemistry, influences on the surroundings.

Structural Engineering and Bridges

Advanced dynamic analysis of structures, bridges for high-speed trains, train-track-bridge and soil-bridge interaction, structural health monitoring, LCC & LCA of bridges, Management, operation, maintenance and repair of bridges, productivity development for the construction process of bridges, new construction materials and methods, loads and load influence on structures, composite structures and soil-steel composite bridges.

Transport Planning, Economics and Engineering

The Division of conducts fundamental and applied research within four main areas: road traffic, rail transportation, public transport and logistics. Quantitative methodologies (including simulation, analytical approaches and modeling), qualitative analysis and advances in computing, information and sensor technologies are common approaches used in our research and taught in our courses. Our research is multidisciplinary by nature and always seen in a multimodal context.
