A new compaction method for vibratory rollers uses automatic frequency control (AFC) to continuously adjust the compaction frequency to obtain resonance in the drum-soil-system, which produces a more efficient compaction process with lower energy consumption. The method was investigated in field experiments on trial embankments using a prototype roller that could utilize both AFC and conventional compaction with a fixed frequency. In this paper, these tests are evaluated with regard to continuous compaction control (CCC) and recommendations are provided for using CCC together with AFC.
