Transport planning

The Division of Transport Planning conducts fundamental and applied research that advances the state of the art and state of practice in the planning, design, operations and management of transport systems and facilities. Our research is multidisciplinary by nature and always seen in a multimodal context.

We contribute to the solution of important transportation problems in Sweden and internationally through innovative, multidisciplinary research and education.

All our activities, including education, are performed in the light of increasing environmental concerns and need for better integration of the transportation system with the built and natural environment. We interact with industry and institutions as well as other universities, in Sweden and internationally, to jointly define current and future important problems and in developing solutions.

The Division work in four main areas: road traffic, rail transportation, public transport and logistics. Quantitative methodologies (including simulation, analytical approaches and modeling), qualitative analysis and advances in computing, information and sensor technologies are common approaches used in our research and taught in our courses.

Key application areas are Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), traffic congestion, rail timetable development, high-speed rail, capacity analysis of transportation facilities, user perspective of public transport services, transport infrastructure operations, traffic control and green goods transport.

Examples of projects:

- The role of headway distribution for high-frequency bus lines, including field trials.

- iMobility lab for real-time analysis of traffic data.

- Time-table stability for railways

- Information technology in public transport.

- Green train concepts
