BRICO – The Nordic Steel Bridge Competition

BRICO is a student competition in bridge design taking place yearly at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia. The competition consists of dimensioning and constructing a steel bridge in miniature which will be assessed based on four different categories:

  • Aesthetics and display of the project
  • Structural efficiency (weight and deflection under load)
  • Construction efficiency (time of assembly)
  • Weight of the bridge

The international KTH team, TrussUs, consisted of students Aaron Ruffels (South Africa), Freddie Karlsson (Sweden), Guayente Minchot (Spain) och Samih Ahmed (Sudan). The team was sponsored by KTH, blacksmith company Smederna och The Swedish Institute of Steel Construction (SBI).

TrussUs unfortunately just missed the top three and ended up in a honorable fourth place. It was a close call between the top four teams and the final results were ultimately decided based on the points from the aesthetic assessment.
