Transportation geotechnics

Model of a railway embankment

Roads and railways are normally constructed on soil embankments. In Sweden, embankments are commonly comprised of crushed rock that is often excavated from tunnels within the same infrastructure project in order to minimize costs and environmental impact. Transportation geotechnics include geotechnical properties of embankment material, ballast and subgrade in relation to the needs and demands for a safe, cost effective and environmentally sustainable transportation infrastructure. We conduct research on foundation methods, construction and compaction of embankments, settlement, degradation and rearrangement as well as dynamic effects caused by traffic load.
