Car travel times in major cities: variation patterns and experienced uncertainty (VARIA)
Based on, among other things, HEATCO's recommendations, the Swedish method of analysis and socioeconomic values for transport (ASEK) states that travel time uncertainty should be valued based on "standard deviation of travel time". It may appear that the question is well-developed and must be well-defined. However, travel times vary in many different dimensions: between routes, over the year, over the week, by day, between days and between individual vehicles (same day at "same" time of day). The objective of the project is to identify which standard deviation is to be estimated and valued, as well as the sources of variation that provide such variation that contribute to "uncertainty". The project's main result is a report describing methods, data, analyzes and conclusions as well as recommendations. The report creates a comprehensive picture of research efforts and results. The project results will also be reported in two scientific articles: one that focuses on GPS travel time data analysis and one that combines GPS analyzes with the traveler's perspective on travel time variability.
